मुझे बेख़ुदी ये तूने भली चाशनी चखाई

Muzaffar Ali may be known better for Umrao Jaan, his composition skills are nothing short of extraordinary if one goes by this album (and another named Husn-e-Jaana). This Abida Parveen album of Sufiyana Gazals is a treat to listen. Abida, known for her sufiyaanaa qalaams, has rendered some choicest Gazals by old masters very powerfully. The recording and arrangements are also of high quality.

Here are the lyrics of one of my favorite Gazal from this album both poetically and as produced in this album. An absolutely enchanting use of language.

मुझे बेख़ुदी ये तूने भली चाशनी चखाई
किसी आरज़ू की दिल में नहीं अब रही समाई

न हज़र है ने ख़तर है न रज़ा है ने दुआ है
न ख़याल-ए-बन्दगी है न तमन्ना-ए-ख़ुदाई

* हज़र = caution, fear
* ख़तर = danger

न मकाम-ए-गुफ़्तगू है न महल्ल-ए-जुस्तजू है
न वहाँ हवास पहुँचें न ख़िरद को है रसाई

* हवास = senses
* ख़िरद = intelligence
* रसाई = arriving, reach

न मकीं है ने मकाँ है न ज़मीं है ने ज़बाँ है
दिल-ए-बेनवा ने मेरे वहाँ छावनी है छाई

* मकीं = inhabitant/master (of a house), (also) grave
* दिल-ए-बेनवा = a heart that is without prosperity/indigent

न विसाल है न हिज़्राँ न सुरूर है न ग़म है
जिसे कहिये ख़्वाब-ए-ग़फ़्लत सो वो नींद मुझको आई

* ख़्वाब-ए-ग़फ़्लत = sound or unconscious sleep
